What is a REC?

A Renewable Energy Credit (REC) (pronounced: rěk, like wreck) is a tradable proof of a specific amount of renewable energy production.

When someone pulls power off of an energy grid, there’s no way to tell if it came from a renewable source. When a REC is traded, it transfers the right to attribute a specific amount of grid electricity to green sources.

What’s the difference?

RECs vs Carbon Offsets?

RECs are used to track the production and consumption of renewable energy on the power grid and are measured in megawatts-hours (MWh).

Carbon Offsets are used to track the capture and release of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) and are measured in carbon dioxide tonnes equivalent (TCO2e).

RECs incentivize grids to transition to renewable power. Carbon offsets incentivize reducing the level of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

How Do RECs Help CLIMATE?

For clean energy generators, selling RECs is a valuable revenue stream which incentivizes more carbon free generation. Some generators can make more revenue from selling RECs than they do from selling electricity.

For grid energy consumers, buying RECs is the only way to prove your electricity is low carbon emitting. Both consumers and regulators are increasingly asking all businesses to prove exactly that.
